Japan is an ancient culture with over two thousand years of ghosts, monsters and changelings of over one hundred different types and all are still haunting their favorite temples, bridges, mountains, and shrines. These legendary creatures grow in stature and stories to this day.  This book contains seven stories ranging from spooky to terrifying.  Scary tricks are the plot of two stories, “What Scares You the Most” and “The Bravest Samurai.”  “The Monster of the Rashomon” and “Snow Woman” are the best known in the West.  Not as well known are the more regional tales of “Snow Ghost,” “The Skeptic” and “Uryu Island.”

Who is doing tandem work?  How did they begin to work together? What is their process? What constitutes a tandem performance?  Is it sometimes multi-cultural? Can it involve other arts’ disciplines? Is it scripted? Is it improv? Can it involve more than two persons? Where do they find appropriate stories?

To explore these questions, articles from over fifty storytellers and tandem teams are included in this book.
Through these we can read from a rich diversity of approaches to tandem telling. Different tools work for different teams.  One or more of these techniques may be what you are seeking, if you hope to become a tandem teller. Even if you have no such plans, I believe that you will be intrigued with these various topics, the contrasts and similarities in how tandem is done, the difficulties and the advantages, and so much more. All of this could increase your appreciation as a listener when you are treated to a tandem performance.

These stories are geared for adult listeners. Some may be too frightening for young children. Most are more complicated stories that children may not understand, or care to follow. All of these tales were told at the Clifton Opera House by the Wrights. For seven seasons, along with Lisa Holmes and Eric Wolf, and until 2009, Shane Dickey.the other members of their troupe, The Yellow Springs Tale Spinners, they performed a scary story program titled “Fright Night.” The first story, “Beware of Frank” is one of Jonatha’s stories of a personal encounter with a mischievous ghost. Harold found both “Marshall Pass” and “Three Finger Riley” while on vacation. “The Preacher and the Haunted House” is Jonatha's version of a well-known tale. Harold translated “Promise Broken; Curse Unspoken” and “The Bravest Samurai,” then the Wrights adapted both for storytelling. It is suggested that you listen to this CD with a friend, someone dependable that you rely upon. It is safer that way.
Compact Disc, Weight 3 1/2 ounces, $10.00 plus shipping and handling.

This is the third CD of the favorite tales told by Jonatha Wright and Harold Wright at Young’s Dairy.   These Scarecrow Stories were told from 2013 through 2015 in the Spooky Barn.
In addition to their solo storytelling careers, the Wrights are members of the Yellow Springs Tale Spinners.  With the other Tale Spinners, Lisa Holmes an Eric Wolf, they have told stories in the Spooky Barn at Young’s Jersey Dairy on Route 68, just north of Yellow Springs, Ohio Since 2008.  Their programs, “When Night Owls Screech and Spiders Creep,” are part of the Haunted Wagon Ride package, offered every Friday and Saturday night in October, 7:30 to 10:00 PM.  This is a program suitable for families with young children.  In fact, much of their audience is under six years old.  But never fear for a moment that other ages are neglected.  Listeners from three to ninety-three will enjoy their spooky tales, tales with unexpected twists or perhaps tales that make you JUMP!
The Yellow Springs Tale Spinners get you all chilled and ready for that Haunted Wagon Ride!
